General Cut Flower Care
A little extra care can make a big difference for any size flower arrangement or fresh flower bouquet. Most floral arrangements last 4-7 days or longer, depending on the flowers used and the care they receive.
Here are the three top tips for looking after your flowers:
Water
The first thing you need to do when you or your recipient receives the flowers is to find a suitable vase or vessel to place them in. The flowers will arrive in an acqua packaging or be carefully wrapped in cellophane.
The packaging will contain water, which has provided them with refreshment on their journey, but they will be thirsting for some new water. Although any vessel will be fine, some recipients would prefer a vase that fits the flowers perfectly.
You can chose from a selection of our vases which will appear in the checkout or can be found by clicking here, and can be sent with your flowers.
When you have found your clean vase, next you need to add fresh water. Do not use ice-cold water, as it is best to use water at room temperature. Provided with your flowers, usually taped to the side of the box will be some flower food. This food contains nutrients that will prolong the longevity of your bouquet. Empty the sachet of plant food into the clean water.
Flower foods make flowers last longer but it is important to follow the mixing directions on the flower food packet. Most packets are to be mixed with a pint of water. Flower foods should not be diluted with more water than is specified on the packet.
Next you need to attend to you flowers. You will need remove the protective packaging and drain away the water. Remember to do this over a sink to avoid spillages
The flowers will be held together with string tied around the stems which holds the flowers in place. Lay the flowers down on the sideboard or sink and cut about 3cm off the stems, ensuring you make the incision at a 45-degree angle. This is to remove a layer that has covered the tips of the flowers, which make it harder to drink the water.
It is advisable to place your flowers in water very soon after you have cut the stems, as the cut stems will begin to heal over out of water, and then will be less able to absorb the water. Remove all leaves that fall below the water line in the vase.
If you are a dab hand at floristry or are familiar with flowers then you can cut the string around the flowers and then reposition the bouquet to fit your vase. Always keep the vase away from fruit, radiators, bright light and drafts.
Remember to take care of your flowers. Bacteria quickly formulates in the water; which is harmful to your flowers, so every other day pour away the old water and use fresh clean water. Recut the stems before you return the flowers to their water.
Food
If the flower food solution becomes cloudy, replace it entirely with properly mixed flower food solution. If possible, re-cut stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife. Be sure to use a sharp knife or clippers that will not crush the stems. Immediately place the stems into solution. Be careful not to cut yourself!
Temperature
Keep flowers in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators. Appliances like televisions give off heat, which causes flowers to dehydrate. Most flowers will last longer under cool conditions.
Lilies

Lilies will drink a lot of water so be careful to make sure the vase does not dry out. Also, as the lilies open, remove the stamen in the centre of the blooms. The stamen will develop a powdery residue that stains as they begin to pollinate and drop from the blooms.
Freesia

Make sure they have plenty of clean water and never let the stem ends dry out. Pinch out the topmost buds and remove the old flower heads to encourage new ones to open. Keep away from fruit, vegetables, and excess heat, as they are sensitive to the ethylene gas produced.
Gerbera

Gerbera enjoy a warmer environment and like bright light, but not direct sunlight, keep the water and the vase clean as gerbera are quite susceptible to bacteria.
Snapdragons

Snapdragons are very sensitive to their environment and special care should be made to follow the directions above. Also, the top 2 inches of the flowers can be removed to encourage the rest of the blooms to open and to prevent curvature of the stems; this is, however, the decision of the person caring for them. They can also be left as they are and enjoyed either way. Remove any damaged or dying foliage or flowers. Recut 1 inch from flower stems every 4 to 5 days to maintain water uptake.
Alstroemeria

Leaves will wilt before the flowers. If desired leaves can be removed before flowers are placed in a vase. Blooms should last about two weeks in water. Take care in transporting the flowers, as the stem joints are brittle and easily broken.
Daffodils

Do not re-cut the stems. Daffodils and Narcissi have sap, which is toxic to other flowers. We ensure that the stems are kept separately in water for at least 12 hours before mixing with other flowers to prevent the sap affecting your bouquet. If kept cool they will last about 1 week.
Roses

The outermost petals on the rose head are left on the heads of your roses to protect them during shipping. You can peel them back and remove them if they have become bruised.
Be very careful to follow the above steps to prolong the life of your roses. Be careful of the thorns - do not remove them, however, as this will cause wounds on the stems which will provide entry for bacteria.
A clean cut is very important; do not crush the stems, as this will impede the uptake of water severely. Should the heads of the roses go limp, stand them in warm water up to their necks to revive them. Keeping them in a cool spot will prevent this from happening.
Tulips
Tulips drink an exceptional amount of water so the water level in the vase should be carefully monitored. They will continue to grow in the vase and stretch towards the light. If they bend out of control, simply wrap them in newspaper for a day to straighten them out, keeping them in the vase to maintain hydration.
Iris

Iris enjoy a cooler environment and will last longer if kept out of the heat
Carnations

Display in a cool location, out of direct sunlight and away from air vents. Avoid excessively hot or cold areas. Check water level daily to make sure container is full and add warm water as needed. Remove any damaged or dying foliage or flowers. Recut 1 inch from flower stems every 4 to 5 days to maintain water uptake Carnations are very sensitive to ethylene and should not be stored next to fruits or vegetables.

What the Colour of your Flowers Mean
White
There is an element of purity in white. Whether this is the purity of a bridal bouquet or the pure feeling and completeness shown at a funeral, the symbolic meaning of flowers that come in rich white show reverence and innocence better than any other.
White breathes a touch of heaven in its petals. Not only is there heaven in white roses; there is also innocence that one can only find in this flower. If only everyone could shine with the pure, innocent look that white roses hold. Next time you look at an assortment of flowers notice the white ones, the ones that hold and maintain the beauty of the rest.
Pink
Whereas red is the colour of deep and abiding love, pink is red’s youthful counterpart. The meaning of pink flowers is one of innocent happiness. At once caring and also carefree, pink flowers allow you to show love more filial than romantic.
Use pink when the meaning of your flowers needs a buoyant touch. Just as the meaning of flowers is important the name of flowers is just as important. There are some great names for pink roses that range in all the different shades. We have the Anna, Ariana, Briazur, Cadillac, Cascaya, Charming Unique, Diplomat, Exotica, Femma, Vision, Clear Ocean, Sterling 95. It seams as though this list could go on and on. However it is important to know that the shade of the flower is important.
Peach
Peach offers a little more friendship than the cutesy romance of a straight pink flower. Mixed with orange and yellow, peach confirms gratitude and tender feeling. On its own, the meaning of flowers in this fleshier tone is at once gentler and stronger in thankfulness.
Friendship is the true meaning of peach flowers. This flower is more of the flower you get that friend who has always been there for you, and you are trying to figure out someway to say thank you. Not only does this flower appeal to the friendship, it also strengthens it. Next time you feel like you need to fix a few things in a friendship start out by giving one a peach rose.
Looking at peach there seems to only be one shade right? Meaning of flowers is stuck on this rose, how is it supposed to come out with just one shade? Well, actually you’d be surprised how many different shades there are for that one colour. Learn how to say thank you with your pick of Aphrodita, Donna, Melody, Ossiana, Versilia, Caramel, and Dumka. These flowers make any thank you an unforgettable one.
Red
Love, above all else, is the symbolic meaning of flowers ranging from crimson to scarlet and back. Brighter reds reveal devoted passion. The deeper the red, the deeper the meaning.
Whether this is love born of beauty, fire, or courage, red is the colour to have. The first is Red Berlin, this nickname illustrates the type of passion one has. Red Berlin is a tomato red rose, this shouldn’t be all that surprising considering all that comes to mind when you think of Red Berlin. The second name given to red roses is Black Magic. This nickname has been given to a dark burgundy rose.
Yellow
Nothing dispels gloom like yellow—not even pink—and the happiness, new life, and smiles carried by a yellow bouquet banish all things melancholy. Yellow in a flower arrangement enlivens the rest of the colours. Trading out romance for simple, ordinary cheer, yellow has one of the brightest symbolic meanings of flowers. There are so many different ways to cheer up someone with all the yellow types of roses.
Might we add to stay away from the Hocus Pocus rose, which does have yellow spots on dark burgundy petals, but this isn’t the type of yellow we want to give. No the best yellow roses are: Aalsmeer Gold, Concorde, Emblem, Golda, Judy, Message, and Papillion.
Green
Green ties in with nature and health. A standalone green bouquet conveys a regenerative quality, incorporating youth and fortune into the symbolic meaning of these flowers. Mixed in with other flowers, the same story carries on.
Green is optimistic; green is alive; green is refreshing. Rejuvenate your bouquet with the uncommon beauty of green. Let someone you know about their health and hope that they will stay strong with green roses, there aren’t that many different shades of green roses, but the few we know of are: Jade Rose, Chartreuse Rose, Lime Sublime Rose, and Green Ice. All though green roses may plentiful, there are only a few types of green roses. This is quite the meaning of flowers.
Purple
Purple has always been the colour of royalty. Since you won’t be giving flowers to kings and queens any time soon, you can think of the symbolic meaning of flowers in this hue as deep respect and admiration.
Success and noble bearing, even without noble titles, deserve the recognition of
